Yesterday CNET reported that later this year Netflix would be integrating full 1080p high-definition into its streaming movie service. They were wrong. Netflix representatives later denied CNET’s claims, but did confirm that 5.1 surround sound would be coming to their streaming services later this year. Currently Netflix’s streaming service, which can be found on Blu-ray players, PCs, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and other web-enabled devices, incorporates only stereo audio of psp games.
Unfortunately the representative did not comment on how exactly the 5.1 audio will be delivered ? compressed, uncompressed, etc. ? but it is nevertheless a step toward a higher fidelity digital distribution service for Netflix.
